What is Ceylon Tea?

Ceylon (say-lawn) tea is a type of tea produced in the island state of Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon. Sri Lanka is small but has a huge range in terms of altitude, climate, soil type, plant varieties and weather, so the flavors and character of the teas produced there vary greatly. Despite regional nuances, the classic Ceylon flavor is generally considered bold, full-bodied and brisk. It has medium to full tannins and some notes of citrus, chocolate or spice.

Ceylon Tea is produced from the dried leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis. The leaves are often described as wiry because they are left long and thin with a wire-like appearance. In the world of tea, these leaves are very easy to identify. Most Ceylon teas are orthodox teas, which means they are hand-crafted to make bright, sparkling teas.

What is OPA Variety?

OPA Tea, The Orange Pekoe-A Tea in full, is a fine grade of tea which consists of slightly larger leaves, compared to other Orange Pekoe varieties like OP and OP1. OPA is the Ceylon black tea grade that has the boldest, large size leaves in appearance. Made of long bold and slightly twisted tea leaves. Once brewed, these teas have a rich aromatic forest-like scent and the lighter liquor generally has a light golden reddish color and a delicate lighter taste. This tea takes slightly longer time to brew compared to other teas, but has a unique taste compared to other smaller grades.
